Preface

This book was not created as a formal collection of facts and documents, but as an attempt to preserve memory. The memory of a place that has its own history, its own voices, its own people, and its own silence - a silence in which it is easy to lose the truth if it is not recorded.
Teteriv is not just a historical geographical name. It is a community that was formed over decades around a railway station, work, everyday life, and human destinies. Here, the stories of families of railway workers, laborers, teachers, and children who grew up in this area are intertwined. And it is precisely from these stories that what we call the identity of a place is formed.
Over time, administrative decisions changed boundaries, names, and formal definitions. But they are not capable of automatically changing people’s memory, nor can they erase what exists in documents, photographs, oral accounts, and family archives. That is why this book is an attempt to preserve what should not disappear or dissolve into general formulations.
This work brings together various materials: archival documents, testimonies, publications, photographs, and memories. They do not claim to be exhaustive, but together they form a coherent picture - a picture of the life of a community that has its own historical continuity and the right to be seen separately, not merely as an addition to other names.
This book is also about responsibility. Responsibility to those who lived here before, to those who live here now, and to those who will seek their roots in the future. Because where memory disappears, the connection between generations disappears as well.
May this material become not a point of completion, but the beginning of a conversation. A conversation about history, about truth, about respect for the place and the people who created it.
And if this book helps even one person better understand what Teteriv is - then it has already fulfilled its main purpose.
